Our Future

Big Class has signed a 10-year lease for our Youth Writing Center in the 7th Ward, scheduled to open in late 2017. This new space of creative possibility for New Orleans' youth, educators, and families will enable Big Class to add several new programs, allowing us to double the students we serve annually through our innovative approach to literacy.

The Center will serve as a hub for literacy, hosting students, teachers, and community members year-round and offering exciting, innovative school-day, after-school, weekend, and summer programming that seeks to energize and elevate educational practices in New Orleans.

When our space opens, we will become 826 New Orleans as we join the join the 826 National network, an award-winning non-profit network of writing centers. Since 2014, Big Class has been in Chapter Development with 826 National. Becoming a chapter when we open our center will allow Big Class to receive strategic support from an accomplished national literacy organization that serves over 32,000 young people annually, while continuing to work as as an independent 501(c)(3) responding to New Orleans’ unique local needs. 826 New Orleans will be the 8th chapter of 826 and the first in the South.

Our Youth Writing Center storefront, The New Orleans Haunting Supply Co. will supply the ghostly denizens of the Crescent City with souls, human disguises, t-shirts, and other goods and services for the non-corporeal. Following 826's award-winning model, the storefront provides a unique portal for Big Class students, families, volunteers, and supporters.

Stay tuned as we announce more exciting news regarding this new space of possibility for New Orleans' young writers.
