Eliza 1.19

Last week: The middle school aftercare group has been pretty resistant to writing, but last week I was introducing them to Patrice our new intern, and we got to talking about our names--nicknames and given--and what they mean to us. On Thursday we read the Sandra Cisneros "My Name is" piece, and started writing our own versions. Some people wrote about memories associated with their names, and others looked up the meanings of their names, and wrote about whether or not they identified with them. Planning to continue the project this week, and potentially publish a quick "My Name Is.." zine.

This week volunteers are coming in during bookmaking to help the 3rd graders type and revise their superhero stories. We have illustrators coming next week so if you know any visual artists who'd be interested, send them my way! Newspaper is working on our 4th issue, which will be published right before Mardi Gras break. 3rd-5th grade aftercare is writing about time travel. Another volunteer orientation on Wednesday at 6:15pm. Volunteer Krewe meeting Saturday where we'll be planning upcoming volunteer celebrations.

Volunteer Adrene works with 3rd grader Dismas on his homework during aftercare.
